Abstract

Primary obstructive megaureter is an uncommon presentation in adults and warrants aggressive surgical management. The disease is characterized by an intrinsic congenital obstruction at the lower 1 to 2 cm of the ureter just before it enters the bladder. A 21-year-old male presented with left loin pain of 2 months duration. A retrograde uretero-pyelography revealed a dilated whole length of the left ureter except for the terminal 1.5 cm. The patient underwent left sided ureteroneocystostomy. Primary obstructive megaureter is associated with complications such as urinary stones, infections and deterioration of renal function. Surgical correction relieves obstruction and improves drainage.
